The coal hoist was newly installed. It was hydraulic and could lift 32 tonnes, raising a coal wagon 16 metres above rail level so that coal could be tipped into the largest vessel. It could empty 50 wagons per hour and the empty wagons ran down the elevated road to be formed into trains.
