Subject notes
Quarrying was of great importance. Rock was needed for railway ballast, road building and other civil engineering projects. Until the First World War, most houses, tenements, and offices were built of stone.

Brick became cheaper with the coming of the railways and it began to displace stone for warehouses and factories.
