Documentation notes
"Torwood Castle. Datestone. Torwood Castle stands in field no 110 (25" OS). The north-west side of this field is bounded by a right of way & a dyke along the edge of Torwood. There were many stones in this dyke which had obviously come from the castle. The date stone was in the dyke roughly NW of the castle & about 200 yards from it.
My father sold the estate in 1913 & after the First World War I went back to look at the stone. Owing to timber operations the dykehead had been all knocked down & the stones covered with debris & c. However, I knew the place & the old gamekeeper scraped about & we rescued the stone, put it in a box & you now have it. Ian Bolton. 5/8/59"
[Letter on file]

"The owner of Torwood castle, Mr Dundas, from whom my grandfather JC Bolton bought Torwood Estate in 1872, or his predecessors were said to have taken the coat-of-arms from the doorway & built it into Carronhall over the door. This mansion was I believe demolished & blown up so I suppose the coat of arms disappeared also then."
