Subject notes
The library was built to commemorate the Jubilee and opened in 1890. Part of the cost was donated by Andrew Carnegie, a Scottish-American owner of US steel plants and philanthropist. The first librarian was part-time; he was also the janitor and manual training teacher at Grange School. There had been libraries in the town since before 1830.
