Stenhousemuir Universalist Church

Biography
Stenhousemuir Universalist Church was established in April 1867 with the Rev James Ure Mitchell as minister. Lay preachers included James Graham, George Ure, Andrew Ure and Robert Stark. The congregation - with the only Universalist Church building in Britain - closed in the 1920s. The congregation's origins were in meetings held in the Corn Exchange, Falkirk, by Rev J U Mitchell and Rev R S Bowie to further Universalist ideas. After the church was formed in Stenhousemuir, Mitchell went to Dunfermline to form another congregation and then to America to get support to build a church in Dunfermline. The Stenhousemuir congregation continued with lay preachers and established links with American Universalists. In 1910 the Rev E T Russell was the McQuaker Trust Missionary and thereafter the congregation joined the Scottish Unitarian Association
