Biography
Walter Alexander & Co (Coachbuilders) Ltd was formed in 1948 in order to purchase the bodybuilding works of Walter Alexander & Sons, in 1949, prior to the nationalisation of bus transport and the acquisition of Walter Alexander & Sons by the British Transport Commission.
In 1968 approximately 700 men and women were employed and the product was mainly passenger service vehicle bodies.

The company was bought out in the 1980s and by 2001 was owned by Mayflower Corporation plc. In 2001 W Alexander & Co (Coachbuilders) Ltd merged with two other bodybuilding companies, Dennis Chassis and Plaxton, to form Transbus International, a subsidiary of Mayflower Corporation plc. In 2004 Mayflower Corporation plc went into administration and the former Dennis Chassis and Walter Alexander parts of the business were bought and formed into Alexander Dennis.
