The Good Templars was the largest of the 19th Century temperance organisations that sought abstemious behaviour and supported efforts to change public policy to strike at 'the liquor traffic' by taking away the licence to do business from the saloons, distributors, and manufacturers of alcohol. It was founded in 1851 in New York, rooted in evangelical Protestantism, and evolved as a fraternal organisation appealing mainly to young working class people.
