Bell family

Biography
Five generations of the Bell family were clients of Russel & Aitken. As several shared the same name, numbers have been added to distinguish them.

The first client was Peter Bell (1), gardener and tea dealer in Falkirk, who acquired heritable property towards Kerse Road (Randygate). His son, Peter Bell (2) was a tea merchant and the sole partner of Peter Bell and Co, and died on 16 April 1828. He had three sons: Peter Bell (3) who died intestate on 4 June 1833, James Bell who died intestate on 18 February 1834 and Alexander Bell (1), who died on 2 November 1842.

Alexander Bell (1) married Isabella Campbell Clark in 1835. The marriage trust included land and property in North Newton, Bothkennar and Kerse Lane, Falkirk. It also included at a later date lands at Gilandersland, Muiravonside. The property at Kerse Lane was sold in 1923 to Falkirk Burgh who in turn sold part to the GPO. Alexander also paid an annuity to Miss Christian Dawson following a Breach of Promise Action after his marriage in 1835. Alexander died only seven years after his marriage and he left a Trust settlement for his three children, who were Peter Bell (4), Agnes Bell, and Alexander Bell (2). Peter Bell (4) died in 1865. Agnes Bell married the son of Sheriff Substitute Sconce who was a tenant of Bellmount and died in 1921.

Alexander Bell (2), died in 1926. He was an inmate of the Asylum for the Insane, Toronto, Canada in 1921. His son was Peter Bell (5) who died in 1944 and whose Trust was wound up in 1957 when his wife, Margaret died. Their nephew, Peter Bell (6), died in 1943 and his widow is believed to have died in 1956. This was the end of Russel & Aitken's dealings with the Bell family of Bellmount.

The architect for the drawings of Bellmount was David Rhind, Edinburgh. Bellmount was leased to successive Sheriff Substitutes in Falkirk (including Sheriff Substitute Sconce) after the death of Peter Bell (4).
