51st Highland Division Trust Fund
Biography
The Trust Fund was set up to support the 51st (Highland) Division during the Second World War.
The 51st (Highland) Division of the British Army was formed at the outbreak of the First World War. It was composed of entirely Highland territorials from the 1st Highland Division (consisting of Argyll and Sutherland Infantry Brigade, the Royal Highlanders and Gordons Infantry Brigade and the Seaforths and Camerons Brigade. Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, the 51st were sent to France and Belgium. They were forced to surrender at St Valery in 1940. After this, the duplicate Division, the 9th (Highland), was re-designated as the 51st (Highland) Division and a few survivors from France joined. In 1945 they ceased to exist as an individual unit, becoming part of the 51st/52nd Scottish Division. The 51st was revived as a separate Territorial Division in 1948 and survived as such until 1967, when it was re-designated as a Brigade of the Scottish Division.
