Anne

Biography
Anne (1632-1716) was the oldest surviving daughter of the 1st Duke and Lady Mary Fielding. Her father and uncle, the 2nd Duke, died in the Royalist cause and she actively opposed the Commonwealth; it is said she fired on a Roundhead general from Strathaven Castle. A lady of great piety and strong Presbyterian principles, she opposed Lauderdale's Episcopalianism, and aided various Covenanters, including those fleeing after their defeat at the Battle of Bothwell Bridge, some 3.2km from Hamilton, in 1679. She supported William III but opposed the Union of 1707 as against Presbyterian interests. She bore her husband 13 children and was famed for good deeds on the estates, being known as 'the good Duchess Anne'.
