Stirling Voluntary Aid Department (VAD)
|
Voluntary Aid Detachments (VADs) were set up in 1909 and could be attached to the British Red Cross Society, the Order of St John (now known as St John's Ambulance Society) or the Territorial Forces Association. The term VAD was also used for individual members of the organisation. During the First World War VADs were administered through the Joint War Committee of the British Red Cross and the Order of St John Detachments consisted of a Commandant, a Lady Supervisor and 20 volunteers, usually women. Four of these were to be trained cooks and initially the work was confined to the home front. Later, VADs were sent to hospitals in France.
