Son of John Luke and Isabella Guthrie. Married Elizabeth McNaughton, 10 Nov 1849, Worked in paper mill in Juniper Green, moved to paper mill in Kilsyth, manager of Carrongrove Mill, Denny in 1858. Leased Headswood bleach mill in 1869 which he turned into a paper manufacturing mill. Son, James Luke took over this mill. Sons Alexander & Robert opened Vale Mill and son Major John Luke opened Anchor Mill. These four sons founded Vale Paper Co in 1894 with James Luke as Managing Director. Carrongrove Inveresk

The company had its origins in Carrongrove Paper Co which was founded in 1877 and taken over by the Inveresk Group in 1924. The Inveresk Group sold Carrongrove to the Georgia Pacific Corporation in 1981 but in 1990 a management buyout saw the formation of Carrongrove Inveresk.
