Born c 1809 (or possibly 1816). First went into business in Peebles in the 1830s. He moved to Falkirk in 1839 and opened a shop at 42 High St, assisted for a time by his brothers John and George. He retired in 1874 or 1875 and the business was taken over by William C Muir. Obituary in Falkirk Herald, 31 January 1878 gives his age as 69, native of Peebles.

William Elliot was a provision merchant whose business was at Vicar Street, Falkirk from at least 1898. The buildings where he had his shops were built by himself and became known as "Elliot's Buildings". Shops built in Camelon and Falkirk c 1901.
