Jeremiah Dixon
|
Jeremiah Dixon FRS (27 July 1733 – 22 January 1779)[1] was an English surveyor and astronomer who is best known for his work with Charles Mason, from 1763 to 1767, in determining what was later called the Mason-Dixon line.
Dixon was born in Cockfield, near Bishop Auckland, County Durham, in 1733, the fifth of seven children, to Sir George Fenwick Dixon 5th Bt. and Lady Mary Hunter. The Mason–Dixon line was surveyed between 1763 and 1767 by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in the resolution of a border dispute involving Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware in Colonial America. It is still a demarcation line among four US states, forming part of the borders of Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia (originally part of Virginia). It represents the cultural border between the Southern United States and the Northern United States. |

Castlecary School
|
Castlecary School was opened on 13 September 1909. Its official school number is 6573. The school was erected just inside the county borders of Stirlingshire by the Cumbernauld School Board. As the parish of Cumbernauld was situated in Dumbartonshire, the Cumbernauld School Board became part of the Education Authority of Dumbartonshire in accordance with the Education (Scotland) Act 1918 (8 & 9 Geo. V, c.48). However, the majority of pupils who attended the school came from Stirlingshire and, therefore, in 1921 the school was transferred from the Education Authority of Dumbartonshire to that of Stirlingshire.

Jake Harvey

Jake Harvey is an artist who was born on 3rd June 1948 and brought up in Yetholm. After attending Kelso High School, he studied sculpture at Edinburgh College of Art from 1966 to 1972 and went on to become the Head of School of Sculpture for eleven years.
His major works include 'The Hugh MacDiarmid Memorial Sculpture', which was unveiled in 1985, the 'Charles Mackintosh Sculpture' in Glasgow (1985), the 'Newcraighall Mining Sculpture' (1987), the 'Compaq Symbol Stone' (1988), and 'Poacher's Tree' for Maclay, Murray and Spens(1991). He was commissioned to produce 'Sculpture Images' for use by Runrig on their 'Amazing Things' album in 1992. He was elected RSA in 1989. In 1997 Harvey was appointed Head of the School of Sculpture at ECA in 1997 and was director of the postgraduate programme. He is currently Emeritus Professor of Sculpture at ECA and lives and works in the Scottish Borders. |
