Provost John Russel was the younger son of James Russel (of Russel & Aitken) and Catherine Crawford. He was educated in Falkirk and Campbeltown and then became a law apprentice with Russel & Aitken.He was elected to Falkirk Town Council in 1856, elected a Bailie in 1861, second Bailie in 1864, Senior Bailie in 1865 and Provost in 1867. He was also Chairman of Falkirk Burgh School Board from 1872 and held various honorary positions including Sheriff-Substitute for Stirlingshire & Dumbartonshire, Commissioner of Supply, JP for Stirlingshire, clerk to the Feuars of Falkirk, president of the Eastern District of Stirlingshire Agricultural Association, and convenor of committee to establish Grahamston Parish Church.
IN 1856 he married Mary Gaff Rennie, daughter of James Rennie of Gowan Bank, Grahamston, and had four children of whom only the eldest, Mary Cook Rennie Russel, survived to adulthood. Ref: Love's Notes & Queries vol 3 pp177-184 |

Special Working Group on the Cullen Report

The Special Working Group on the Cullen Report was set up following the publication of Lord Cullen's report on the Public Inquiry into the Shootings at Dunblane Primary School on 13 March 1996 (The Cullen Report) Cm3386. This was a Member/Officer working group and it reviewed security in schools and responses to firearms issues. Following the conclusion of the Working Group the recommendations were adopted by Falkirk Council and implemented by staff

Falkirk Laurieston West Church of Scotland
|
The Reformed Presbyterian Church of Laurieston was granted permission to form into a separate congregation from the Stirling congregation of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in 1784. It was four years before a the first minister, Rev. John Reid, was appointed in July 1788. In 1789 the first church was built. In 1863 the church was built on its site it James Street, Laurieston. In 1876, The Reformed Presbyterian Church of Laurieston became the Free Church of Laurieston. In 1900 it became the United Free Church of Laurieston and in 1929 it entered the Church of Scotland and took the name Laurieston West. The congregation united with Laurieston St Columba's on 25 April 1945 to form Laurieston Church. The manse and the church were subsequently sold. Laurieston Church linked with Redding and Westquarter Church in 1980.
