John Johnston
|
In 1883 John Johnston built the property opposite the present [Bo'ness] Library, fronting North Street, as bakehouse, shops and dwellinghouses. As trade expanded he bought the premises which are now converted into flats (overlooking Waggon Road), installed a new bakehouse at ground level and made the upper storeys into a granary, flour stores etc. Part of the present Library was bakehouse, part stable for his van horses. While his son, James Stevens Johnston owned the firm he converted the stables into a garage for vans. Upon his [ie:James Stevens Johnston] retirement in the late 1950s, the bakery business was sold.
