Sites and Monument Record: Birns Limekiln (SMR 79)
Description
A rural kiln attached to the now ruinous small farmsteading at Birns, once part of the Lochgreen estate. Shown on the 1st ed OS map. The remains of the kiln consist of a horseshoe shaped earthern mound with stone faces visible at the sides of the open end. The pot measures c2.8m in diameter with a flue 2.0 m long. The form suggests a flare kiln. Surface drains are placed to keep the kiln dry. A circular feature to the N may represent a prehistoric hut platform rather than an earlier kiln.
