Sites and Monument Record: Mumrills Roman Fort (SMR 145)

Description
The fort at Mumrills Farm, Laurieston, was only discovered in 1912. At 2.6ha it is by far the largest fort on the Antonine Wall. There appear to have been two forts on the site, the earlier occupying the area of the later annexe; this fort had ramparts of turf. The latter fort had ramparts of clay and an enormous principia. Both were contemporary with the Antonine Wall.
There have been two main campaigns of excavation. That from 1926-28 was published by George Macdonald; that from 1959-60 by Kenneth Steer.
The annexe (and earlier fort) are covered with housing, but the later fort is situated in a ploughed field.
