Sites and Monument Record: Camelon Native Site (SMR 147)

Description
A multi-ditched promontory fort overlooking the River Carron at Camelon. The flat approach from the south was defended by 4 ditches (or 3 ditches and a palisade ). The inner most ditch, A, was 6.4m wide and 4.27m deep, and was V shaped. B was not a ditch, but a palisade, measuring 0.61m by 0.46m and was U shaped. Ditch C was found to be roughly V shaped measuring 6.1m by 3m, with similar stratigraphy to A. Ditch D was again V shaped, measuring 3.6m by 1.5m. Its outer edge cut into the infill of a smaller V shaped feature, potentially a ditch which had dimensions of 1.22m by 0.61m. Inside the enclosure was a large roughly circular house of at least two phases.
The promontory was incorporated into the northern annexe of Camelon Roman fort. Associated finds were all Roman and are now in Falkirk Museum. The site was removed by gravel quarrying.
