Portdownie Iron Works was founded in 1845 by Crosthwaite, John Miller and John Smith. This partnership was dissolved in 1854 and the works were purchased by John Smith and Mr Fullerton, to become known as Smith, Fullerton & Co. In 1898 a new moulding shop and a loading shed were erected.
