Site history notes
Access across the river at this point was by means of a dangerous ford or by a ferry. In 1773 a charity play was performed in Edinburgh to raise money for a bridge, and the following year local landowners subscribed some money. The bridge erected in 1775 cost c £3,000, of which the Carron contributed a third. This old bridge was replaced in 1906 due to the advent of the tramway system. The new bridge was designed by David Ronald and cost £3715. This bridge has masonry parapets, but the main beams under the bridge consist of substantial steel girders with brick jack arches between the beams.
