1885, Jan: Iron church opened for the Baptists in Melville Street. It measured 60 ft (72 with the function rooms) by 36 ft, and sat 400 with a 4 ft wide central aisle. Built by Messrs Crogan and Co, corrugated iron manufacturers, London, for £500. Half of the cost of the structure was paid for by James Wilson. Wood and felt were also used in the construction, but it became known locally as the "tin kirk". (It was later used as a cinema and then an agricultural building near Edinburgh).
