Site history notes
Gartcows House belonged to Humphrey Sworde and were sold to the Kincaid family. They were subsequently acquired by Thomas Heugh (see a 1812.21). In the 19th century the Aitken family made its fortune at the Falkirk brewery and bought the lands and house. With the land it was sold in the early 1930s for the Falkirk & District Royal Infirmary. It was used as a nurses home until the mid 1950s, when it was demolished.
The original house appears to have been a two-storey building, aligned W/E. A wide north projecting wing was added to the NW corner and the whole building was rendered. By 1890 there were four chimney stacks and a photograph of it at that date shows it set in rural grounds. The house faced north, towards the town of Falkirk. After being purchased by the Aitken family it was extensivel remodelled to look like a typical Victorian villa with a new south facing facade containing a squat square tower near the SE corner.
