Administrative History
The Forbes family originated in Aberdeenshire and ran a coppersmith business in Aberdeen. In the 1760s and 1770s the business expanded to London where William Forbes established a separate coppersmith business. In 1783 William Forbes purchased Callendar and Almond Estates and later purchased Herbertshire Estate near Denny, Sanquhar Estates near Prestwick, Ayrshire and Earlstoun Estate in Dumfries.

There have been five successive William Forbes of Callendar: William (1743-1815); William (1806-1855); William (1833-1871); Charles William (1871-1948) and William Frederick (b. 1933).

Callendar House was part of Callendar Estates until 1963 when it was sold along with part of the surrounding parkland to Falkirk Town Council. Another part of the surrounding parkland was transferred in 2000 to a consortium led by the Forestry Commission as part of the Millenium Forest.
