William Forbes began acquiring lands in Ayrshire in the 1780s, including the barony of Sanqhuar and other nearby farms and lands.

The Forbes family originated in Aberdeenshire and ran a coppersmith business in Aberdeen. In the 1760s and 1770s the business expanded to London where William Forbes established a separate coppersmith business. In 1783 William Forbes purchased Callendar and Almond Estates and later purchased Herbertshire Estate near Denny, Sanquhar Estates near Prestwick, Ayrshire and Earlstoun Estate in Dumfries.

here have been six successive William Forbes of Callendar: William (1743-1815); William (1806-1855); William (1833-1871); Charles William (1871-1948), William Dudley Henry Charles (192-1977) and William Frederick (b. 1933).
