James Davie

Biography
Father of James Alan Davie (artist b. 1920). James Davie studied at Glasgow School of Art and became art master at Grangemouth High School – where his son later attended. Davie was mainly known as an etcher but he did occasionally exhibit paintings at the major annual shows at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh and at the Royal Glasgow Institute. In the 1920’s he showed at least two paintings of his infant son.

When Alan Davie turned 16 his father gave him oil paints, brushes and a mirror and invited him to paint a self-portrait. This painting formed part of the portfolio that helped him gain an entrance scholarship to Edinburgh College of Art in 1937.
