Bankier Distilling Co

Biography
Proprietors Messrs James & John Risk Bankier was built in 1828 but was closed in 1928. The maltings were used until 1971 and the buildings were demolished in 1981. The distillery drew its water from Doups Burn. This was the focus of a legal case, John Young & Co versus Bankier Distillery Co (1893). It has become an international landmark in environmental law. Young & Co began pumping water out of their coal mine into Doups Burn. The water was still fit to drink, but its chemical composition was changed making it no longer suitable for whisky production. The distillery won the case, stopping the pumping.
