Alexander Melville
|
Rev Alexander Melville (1809-1839), son of Andrew Melville, minister of Logie, Fife. Educated at St Andrews, MA 1829, licensed by Presbytery of Cupar, 12 Aug 1829 and presented to Falkirk Old in 1835, ordained 22 January 1836. Died 2 Dec 1839. Married Catherine, daughter of Patrick Macfarlane DD, minister at Greenock. Son, Andrew, became prominent in Free Church of Scotland. SC 67/36/21 (535) Inventory , 10 Mar 1842

John Brown Clark
|
John Brown Clark (born 22 September 1964) is a Scottish former footballer. He is best known for his achievements in a lengthy playing career with Dundee United. He top scored for them in the run to the 1987 UEFA Cup Final in which he scored in the defeat in the final. Among his four goals in that run was one against F.C. Barcelona at Camp Nou in the quarter final.
He also played for Stoke City, Falkirk, Dunfermline Athletic, Ross County, Ayr United and Berwick Rangers. |

Torwood School
|
Torwood School opened on 25 Sept 1875. It was closed as a primary school and re-opened in 1964/65 as a Junior Occupation Centre and in 1975 became a school for children with complex learning needs. In 1999 it became a primary only provision. In 2007 the pupils were moved to specialist bases within new integrated primary schools in the Falkirk area.

Polmont Old Parish Church
|
Polmont Parish was disjoined from Falkirk by the Commissioners of Teinds on 22 July 1724. In 1929 with the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church of Scotland, the congregation took the name Polmont North Church, The name Polmont Old was adopted in 1977 when Polmont South changed its name to Brightons Parish Church. Redding and Westquarter was run as a church extension charge from Polmont North. Linked with Shieldhill from 10 September 1961 to1 November 1963. First church building completed 1734, second church building completed 1844.

Alexander Gauld (d 1929) was an architect, who designed various buildings in Falkirk area. Died in Bangour Village but usual residence was 32 Buccleuch St, Edinburgh. Aged 62.

Robert Dollar
|
Businessman (1844-1932) Born in Falkirk, emigrated to Canada aged 14. Worked in a barrel-making factory in Ottawa and then a lumber camp. By age 22 he ran a lumber camp of 50 men, then moved to Michigan to set up his own company, the British Canadian Lumber Company. Moved to California in 1888 and opened a lumber mill. Started a shipping line in 1901. Granted Freedom of Falkirk in 1912. Dollar donated money for the purchase of Dollar Park to the town, as well as money to buy library books, bells for Falkirk Old Parish Church, fountain in Victoria Park. Robert Dollar financed Falkirk's first free library which opened in 1888. It was sited in the Y.M.C.A. on the corner of New Market Street and Glebe Street, and remained the town's library until a new building opened in 1902. He also donated the money for the construction of Falkirk Public Baths. The saga of Falkirk's public baths was a long one beginning in 1905 when Robert Dollar decided to donate a sum towards their construction. The money was eventually diverted to buying Dollar Park and Mr Dollar's money was never used for its original purpose. The baths were eventually opened in 1932 in the Pleasance, 27 years after Robert Dollar made his offer. He also donated a set of bells for Falkirk Parish Church in 1926. The Dollar chimes consisted of 13 bells, the largest of which weighed 3000 lbs. The dedication of the bells was conducted by Rev. Alexander Loudon.

Bo'ness Town Council. Town Clerk
|
The office of Town Clerk in Bo'ness pre-dates the establishment of Bo'ness Town Council. The Harbour & Town Trustees and the Police & Burgh Commissioners employed local solicitors as clerks and the office of Town Clerk evolved out of these appointments. The Town Clerk kept the minutes, correspondence and other administrative records of the local authorities and acted as their legal adviser. The post ceased to exist with the abolition of Bo'ness Town Council in 1975 and the functions were mainly transferred to the Chief Executive or to the Director of Law & Administration of Falkirk District Council.
